Braunol mucous membrane antiseptic
Braunol is a solution for use on the skin with an active ingredient content of 7.5% povidone-iodine.This product is an antiseptic used for disinfection and antimicrobial treatment.No prescription is required for this product.
Areas of application
Braunol is used to disinfect the intact outer skin and to antiseptic the mucous membrane, for example before operations, biopsies, injections, punctures, blood samples and bladder catheterizations.It is also suitable for antiseptic wound treatment, such as pressure sores, leg ulcers, burns and infected skin diseases.It can also be used for hygienic and surgical hand disinfection.
Active ingredients and ingredients
The active ingredient in Braunol is povidone-iodine, with a content of 7.5 g of povidone-iodine per 100 g of solution, which corresponds to a content of 10% available iodine.The other ingredients include sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium iodate, macrogol lauryl ether 9 EO (Ph. Eur.), sodium hydroxide and purified water.
Contraindications
Braunol must not be used if you are allergic to povidone-iodine or any of the other ingredients.Its use is also not permitted in the case of hyperthyroidism, other thyroid diseases, the rare chronic skin inflammation dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring or if radiotherapy of the thyroid gland with iodine (radioiodine therapy) is planned or carried out until the treatment has been completed.In addition, it should not be used in very small premature babies with a birth weight of less than 1500 g.
Dosage and application
Braunol should always be used exactly as directed.The preparation is applied undiluted for skin disinfection or antiseptic of the mucous membrane.The exposure time is at least 15 seconds to 10 minutes, depending on skin type.When disinfecting hands, 3 ml are used for hygienic hand disinfection and 2 x 5 ml for surgical hand disinfection, each with an exposure time of 1 minute or 5 minutes.Braunol is applied undiluted for wound treatment, while it can be diluted for rinsing, washing and bathing.
Patient information
Particular caution is required when using Braunol if you suffer from thyroid disease or are taking lithium therapy.The oxidizing effect of povidone-iodine may influence diagnostic examinations.It should be used with caution in children and the elderly and monitoring of thyroid function is necessary.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, Braunol should only be used on the express instructions of the doctor and in an extremely limited manner.In this case, a check of the child's thyroid function is necessary.Accidental ingestion of Braunol by the infant through the mouth must be avoided at all costs.
Notes
Dilutions of Braunol should always be made fresh and used as soon as possible.The brown color of the preparation indicates its effectiveness, while extensive discoloration indicates the exhaustion of effectiveness.After use, a check of thyroid function is indicated in infants and small children.
