Instructions for use for BRAUNOL Mucous membrane antiseptic, 100 ml

Instructions for use for Braunol mucous membrane antiseptic

Braunol is an antiseptic suitable for use on skin, mucous membranes and wounds. It contains the active ingredient povidone iodine and is offered in a 7.5% solution. No prescription is required for this product.

Areas of application

Braunol is used to disinfect intact external skin or to antiseptic the mucous membrane, for example before operations, biopsies, injections, punctures, blood sampling and bladder catheterizations. It is also suitable for antiseptic wound treatment, such as pressure sores, leg ulcers, burns and infected skin diseases.Braunol can also be used for hygienic and surgical hand disinfection.

Active ingredients and ingredients

The active ingredient in Braunol is povidone iodine. Each 100 g solution contains 7.5 g of povidone-iodine with a content of 10% available iodine.Other ingredients include sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium iodate, macrogol lauryl ether 9 EO (Ph. Eur.), sodium hydroxide and purified water.

Contraindications

Braunol must not be used if you are allergic to povidone-iodine or any of the other ingredients of the medicine. The use of Braunol is also not suitable for hyperthyroidism, other thyroid diseases, the chronic skin inflammation dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring or if radiation therapy of the thyroid with iodine (radioiodine therapy) is planned or carried out.In addition, the medicine should not be used in very small premature babies with a birth weight of less than 1500 g.

Dosage and application

Braunol is intended for external use undiluted or in dilutions. The preparation is applied undiluted for skin disinfection or antiseptic of the mucous membrane. The exposure time is at least 15 seconds for skin with few sebaceous glands and at least 10 minutes for skin rich in sebaceous glands.During preoperative skin disinfection, “puddle formation” under the patient should be avoided to avoid skin irritation.

Braunol is also used undiluted for hand disinfection. For hygienic hand disinfection, 3 ml is rubbed into the hands, followed by hand washing after an exposure time of 1 minute. For surgical hand disinfection, 2 x 5 ml are rubbed into the hands, with an exposure time of 5 minutes, during which the hands must be kept moist with the undiluted preparation.

For the antiseptic treatment of superficial wounds, Braunol is applied undiluted to the areas to be treated. The solution can be diluted for antiseptic rinses, washes and baths. The following dilutions are recommended as guideline values: Rinses as part of wound treatment and perioperative infection prophylaxis 1:2 to 1:20, antiseptic washes 1:2 to 1:25, antiseptic partial baths approx. 1:25 and antiseptic full baths approx. 1:100.

The frequency and duration of use depends on the indication at hand.Braunol can be used once or several times a day.Wound treatment should be continued as long as there are still signs of infection or a clear risk of infection in the wound conditions.

Patient information

Take special care when using Braunol if you suffer from thyroid disease or have a goiter. In these cases, the medicine should only be used over a longer period of time and over large areas if the doctor has expressly instructed you to do so.Even after therapy has ended, attention should be paid to early symptoms of possible hyperthyroidism and, if necessary, thyroid function should be monitored.

Regular use of Braunol should be avoided if lithium therapy is used at the same time.Because of the oxidizing effect of the active ingredient povidone-iodine, various diagnostic tests can produce false-positive results during treatment with Braunol.Povidone-iodine can influence the iodine uptake of the thyroid, which can lead to interference with diagnostic tests of the thyroid.

Repeated use of Braunol should be avoided in children. After use, a check of thyroid function is necessary.Accidental ingestion of Braunol by the infant through the mouth must be avoided at all costs.

The risk of hyperthyroidism caused by iodine is increased in older people. You should therefore only use Braunol after consulting your doctor. In older patients with goiter or a particular predisposition to thyroid dysfunction, large-scale and long-term use of Braunol should only be carried out on the express instructions of the doctor.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, Braunol should only be used on the express instructions of the doctor and in an extremely limited manner. In this case, a check of the child's thyroid function is necessary.Accidental ingestion of Braunol by the infant with its mouth on the breastfeeding mother must be avoided at all costs.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Braunol can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.Very rarely, hypersensitivity reactions of the skin or acute reactions of the immune system can occur.Occasionally there may be a local burning sensation at the start of treatment.Long-term use of Braunol on extensive wound and burn areas can result in significant iodine absorption.

Storage

Small-volume containers (up to 250 ml) should not be stored above 25°C.No special storage conditions are required for larger containers.Braunol should be kept out of the reach of children. The medicine must not be used after the expiry date stated on the label.Extensive discoloration of the solution indicates that the effectiveness of the preparation has been exhausted.
