How does Dolortriptan® work for migraines?

The messenger serotonin plays a central role in a migraine attack.Serotonin regulates, among other things, the constriction and expansion of blood vessels.In migraines, an imbalance in serotonin levels leads to dilation of the meningeal vessels, which can lead to inflammation.At the same time, nerve cells in the brain are excessively stimulated and dampened again, which leads to a change in the electrolyte balance and thus to migraine headaches.

The active ingredient almotriptan contained in Dolortriptan® tablets interacts with the messenger substances involved in migraines and helps to bring them back into balance.Almotriptan is one of the triptans that have a targeted effect on dilated blood vessels.Dolortriptan® works best when taken at the beginning of a migraine attack.

Area of application

Dolortriptan® for migraines is a migraine therapeutic that is used to treat acute headache phases during migraine attacks with and without aura.Typical symptoms of a migraine are a unilateral, pounding headache, nausea and sensitivity to light and noise.It is suitable for adults aged 18 to 65.

Mode of action

The active ingredient almotriptan contained in Dolortriptan® for migraines specifically inhibits inflammatory processes during migraine attacks and narrows the blood vessels in the meninges that are dilated during migraine headaches.Dolortriptan® works after just half an hour and can therefore alleviate the typical migraine symptoms.

1 Tablet of Dolortriptan® for migraines contains 12.5 mg almotriptan as an active ingredient.

As other ingredients, it contains mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone K29-32, poly(O-carboxymethyl) starch, sodium salt, sodium stearyl fumarate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, macrogol 400, carnauba wax and printing ink, which consists of hypromellose, propyl glycol and indigo carmine (E132).

Contraindications

Dolortriptan® should not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients, in children under 18 years of age, in adults over 65 years of age, in the prevention of migraines, in diseases that limit the blood supply to the heart, such as a heart attack, chest pain or discomfort, heart problems without pain, severe or irregular high blood pressure, in the event of a stroke, blockage of the large arteries of the legs or arms, when taking other medicines for migraines and in severe liver disease.

Before taking it, you should consult a doctor if you have an unclear type of migraine, an increased risk factor for heart disease, mild to moderate liver disease, severe kidney disease, a sudden onset of skin rash associated with severe headaches or headaches that last longer than 24 hours, if you are over 65 years old, if you consume more than 10 cigarettes a day, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dosage

Dolortriptan® for migraines should be taken with liquid as early as possible after the onset of the migraine headache.However, it is also effective when taken later in the migraine attack.

Almotriptan must not be used prophylactically to prevent a migraine attack.The tablets can be taken without regard to meals.

Adults (18-65 years) should take one tablet containing 12.5 mg almotriptan.A second dose may be taken if symptoms return within 24 hours.This second dose may only be taken if it has been at least two hours since the first dose was taken.

The maximum recommended dose is two doses within 24 hours.Children and adolescents under 18 years of age and older patients over 65 years of age should not use Dolortriptan®.

No dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with mild or moderate renal impairment. Patients with severe renal impairment may not take more than one 12.5 mg tablet in a 24-hour period.There are no data available on the use of almotriptan in patients with hepatic impairment.

Intake

Take the tablets with liquid (e.g. water).The tablets can be taken without regard to meals.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking the product if your type of migraine has not been diagnosed, if you are allergic to antibacterial medicines used primarily to treat urinary tract infections (sulfonamides), if your headache symptoms are different from your usual attacks, if you have risk factors for heart disease, if you have mild to moderate liver disease, if you have severe kidney disease, if you have:Are 65 years old or if you are taking antidepressants such as SSRIs or SNRIs.

Long-term use of painkillers for headaches can cause them to worsen.If such a case occurs or is suspected, you should seek medical advice and interrupt treatment.A diagnosis of medication overuse for headaches (MKS) should be considered if you have frequent or daily headaches even though (or because) you regularly take headache medications.

Children under 18 years of age must not take the medicine.If you are over 65 years old, you should talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.

Almotriptan may cause drowsiness.If this is the case for you, you must not drive a vehicle or use any tools or machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

For almotriptan, there are very limited data in pregnant patients.Almotriptan should only be taken during pregnancy if your doctor tells you to do so and only after your doctor has carefully assessed the benefits and risks.

Caution is advised when taking this medicine while breastfeeding.You should not breast-feed for 24 hours after taking this medicine.
