Biocarn syrup is a medicine that contains levocarnitine. Levocarnitine is a substance that occurs naturally in the body and plays an important role in energy metabolism. It supports the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria of the cells, the "power plants" of the cell. There, the fatty acids are burned and converted into energy. Levocarnitine also plays a role in the disposal of waste products of energy metabolism. Biocarn syrup is used to treat carnitine deficiency. It is also recommended for certain muscle diseases such as muscular dystrophy when functioning muscles are still present. In addition, it can replace the loss of levocarnitine during haemodialysis. The recommended dosage is 1 gram of levocarnitine (3.3 ml Biocarn syrup = 1 measuring cup) per day. The syrup can be taken after haemodialysis. The duration of use is determined by the doctor. Side effects such as nausea and vomiting may occur. In case of overdose, sorbitol-induced diarrhoea and toxic effects are not known. If a dose is missed, a double dose should not be taken. It is important to take the medicine regularly to ensure the success of the therapy. Biocarn syrup contains 1 gram of levocarnitine per 3.3 ml of syrup. The other ingredients are purified water, sorbitol solution 70%, lemon flavouring, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and hydrochloric acid for pH adjustment. The medicinal product should be protected from moisture and should not be used for longer than 3 months after opening. Biocarn Syrup is well tolerated and approved as a medicinal product.
