Area of application

This mineral supplement is used to bind phosphate from food, thereby reducing the absorption of phosphate into the body.It is used in patients with severe kidney disease who require dialysis to treat and prevent elevated blood phosphate levels.

Each film-coated tablet contains 500 mg calcium diacetate, which corresponds to 126.7 mg calcium ions.In addition, the preparation contains the following excipients: microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, hypromellose, macrogol 6000, vegetable magnesium stearate, povidone K30, 2.4 mg sucrose and talc.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken if there is an increased calcium concentration in the blood or if there is an allergy to calcium acetate or one of the other ingredients.No prescription is required for this product.

Dosage

Always take the medicine exactly as described or after consulting your doctor or pharmacist.The recommended dose for adults is initially 2 film-coated tablets three times a day.The dosage depends on the phosphate concentration in the blood and should be checked regularly.The usual dose is 3 to 4 film-coated tablets three times a day, although the maximum dose of 12 tablets per day should not be exceeded.The treatment is long-term therapy and requires regular medical supervision.

There are no data on use for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, therefore use cannot be recommended for this age group.

An overdose can lead to a high calcium concentration in the blood and calcification of tissue.Symptoms of overdose may include muscle weakness, abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, vomiting, intense thirst, irregular heartbeat, and loss of consciousness.In this case, contact your doctor immediately.

If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose.Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor.

Intake

The film-coated tablets should be taken whole with a little liquid, only with meals, so that the medicine can work as effectively as possible.

Patient information

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking.Nutritional counseling may be recommended to control dietary phosphate and calcium intake.The dosage is adjusted to the amount of phosphate absorbed through food and removed through dialysis.Regular monitoring of phosphate and calcium concentrations in the blood is required, at least once a month.

There is an increased risk of hypercalcemia if you take medicines containing vitamin D at the same time.Learn about the signs of hypercalcemia and seek medical advice before taking antacids containing calcium.If cardiac glycosides are taken at the same time, regular EKG-examinations and checks of the calcium level are necessary.

The medicine has no effect on the ability to drive, but a greatly increased calcium concentration in the blood can lead to impaired consciousness.Look out for signs of elevated calcium levels before driving or operating machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.There are no data on use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.Only take the preparation on the express instructions of your doctor and with regular monitoring of serum calcium levels.

Notes

Have your blood calcium and phosphate levels checked regularly.If family members have had calcium-containing kidney stones, consult your doctor before taking.Avoid large amounts of vitamin D.
