Thioctacid 600 T is a medicine that is used to treat abnormal sensations caused by diabetic nerve damage (polyneuropathy).The active ingredient alpha-lipoic acid, also known as thioctic acid, is a naturally occurring substance in the body that influences metabolism and has antioxidant properties.These properties protect the nerve cells from harmful degradation products.

No prescription is required for this product.However, it is important to use the medicine exactly as directed to achieve the best possible outcome.

Application and dosage

Thioctacid 600 T is used as a solution for injection.The usual dose is one ampoule daily (600 mg alpha-lipoic acid).The solution can be injected undiluted into a vein or mixed with physiological saline solution and used as a venous drip (short infusion).Administration should take place over at least 12 minutes.Due to the light sensitivity of the active ingredient, the infusion solution should only be prepared shortly before use and protected from light with aluminum foil.The light-protected infusion solution has a shelf life of approximately 6 hours.

The injection solution is usually used over a period of 2-4 weeks in the initial phase of treatment.Treatment can then be continued with oral tablets, taking 300 mg to 600 mg of alpha-lipoic acid daily.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Thioctacid 600 T can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include:

Gastrointestinal tract: Nausea and vomiting may occasionally occur.

Application site reactions: Very rarely, injection site reactions and allergic reactions such as rash, hives and itching may occur.In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions of the entire body, including shock, can occur.

Nervous system: Occasionally there may be a change in the sense of taste.Very rarely, seizures and double vision may occur.

Blood and blood vessels: Skin bleeding and blood clotting disorders can occur very rarely.

General side effects: Head pressure and respiratory distress can often occur after rapid intravenous injection, but these subside spontaneously.Very rarely, improved glucose utilization can lead to a drop in blood sugar levels, which can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, sweating, headaches and blurred vision.

Storage

Thioctacid 600 T should be kept out of the reach of children.The medicine must not be used after the expiry date stated on the outer carton and container.The container should be stored in the outer carton to protect the contents from light.After preparation, the infusion solution must be protected from exposure to light and has a shelf life of approximately 6 hours.

Thioctacid 600 T contains alpha-lipoic acid, trometamol salt (corresponding to 600 mg alpha-lipoic acid) as the active ingredient.The other ingredients are trometamol and water for injections.
