This is how Lactulose STADA® works

Lactulose is an indigestible disaccharide made from milk sugar.The anti-constipation active ingredient contained in lactulose syrup draws water into the intestines, which softens the intestinal contents.In the large intestine, the agent can be broken down by the bacteria there.The resulting breakdown products, such as lactic acid and acetic acid, have a laxative effect: they stimulate intestinal movement and thereby make bowel movements easier.Lactulose STADA® is a medication available over the counter to regulate digestion and is characterized by good long-term tolerability.

Lactulose STADA 66.7g/100ml syrup for constipation contains: The active ingredient is lactulose.100 ml of syrup contains 66.7 g of lactulose.Due to its production, Lactulose STADA® contains fructose, galactose and lactose.The other ingredients are D-galactose, lactose monohydrate, purified water.

Application

For constipation, adults take 7.5-15ml lactulose STADA® 1-2 times a day.The usual dose for children is 4.5-9ml 1-2 times daily.Larger doses of Lactulose STADA® are often necessary, especially at the beginning of the treatment of constipation.In general, this slightly higher starting dose can be reduced after 3-4 days.Measure the dose of Lactulose STADA® required for you.This amount of syrup is then mixed with water or with warm drinks, e.g. coffee or tea, or stirred into yogurt, muesli or porridge and taken with these foods.Lactulose STADA® can be taken independently of meals.If a single dose is sufficient to successfully treat constipation, taking it in the morning after breakfast has proven to be particularly well tolerated.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of the preparation.If you have symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting and fever, you should seek medical advice immediately as these may be signs of a serious illness such as intestinal obstruction (ileus) or inflammation of the gastrointestinal area.

Dosage

Please remember that after taking the specified doses of Lactulose STADA® it takes a considerable amount of time, often varying from patient to patient, until the desired effect appears.The laxative effect of Lactulose STADA® can occur after just 2 to 10 hours, but it can also take 1 to 2 days until the first bowel movement, especially if the dosage is still insufficient.Lactulose STADA® must be dosed differently depending on the area of application.The dosages given here can only be used as a guide and may need to be changed to achieve the desired effect.

Intake

Patient information

Particular caution is required when taking the medication if there are disturbances to the water and electrolyte balance (salt losses).If you have been suffering from constipation for a long time, you should seek advice and examination from your doctor before starting therapy with the medicine, as chronic disorders or impaired bowel movements can be signs of a more serious illness. Since an inherited fructose intolerance may not yet have been recognized in infants and small children, they should only receive the preparation after consulting a doctor.

The medicine has no adverse effects on perception, judgment or the ability to react.

Pregnancy

There are no known harmful effects of lactulose when taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding.Lactulose can also be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Other

The laxative effect can occur after 2-10 hours; if the amounts are insufficient, it can take 24-48 hours before the first bowel movement.While taking the medication, care should be taken to eat a diet rich in fiber, as this supports the laxative effect.Raw vegetable salads and whole grain products are particularly suitable.Consuming large amounts of fresh yogurt promotes the important colonization of the colon with bifidus bacteria.Make sure you drink enough fluids (at least 2 liters daily).For diabetics, the synthetic content of lactulose in digestible carbohydrates must be taken into account (100 ml contains a maximum of 17g = 1.4 BE).
