Description

The preparation is a laxative and is also used in liver and intestinal therapy.It helps with constipation that cannot be relieved by a high-fiber diet and other measures.It is also used for diseases that require easier bowel movements.Another area of application is the prevention and treatment of portocaval encephalopathy, a disorder of brain function caused by chronic liver disease, particularly cirrhosis.

Active ingredients and ingredients

The main active ingredient of the preparation is lactulose.In addition, it contains the excipients fructose, galactose, lactose and purified water.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to lactulose or any of the other ingredients.The product should also not be used if you have symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting and fever, as these symptoms can indicate a serious illness such as intestinal obstruction or inflammation in the gastrointestinal area.In such cases you should seek medical advice immediately.

Dosage

Always take the medicine exactly as directed.The dosage depends on the area of application and can vary from patient to patient.For constipation, the usual dose for adults is 5 to 10 grams, equivalent to 7.5 to 15 milliliters, once or twice a day.Children should take 3 to 6 grams, equivalent to 4.5 to 9 milliliters, once or twice a day.A higher dose may be required at the start of treatment, which may be reduced after a few days.

For portocaval encephalopathy, adults should take 5 to 10 grams 3 to 4 times a day at the start of treatment.The dose can then be slowly increased to 20 to 30 grams 3 to 4 times daily to achieve two to three loose stools per day.There are no specific dosage information for children.

The duration of treatment depends on the individual clinical picture.Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you think the effect is too strong or too weak.

Intake

Measure out the required dose and mix it with water or warm drinks such as coffee or tea.Alternatively, the syrup can be stirred into yogurt, muesli or porridge and taken with these foods.It can be taken regardless of meals.When taken once to treat constipation, taking it in the morning after breakfast has proven to be particularly well tolerated.

Patient information

Particular caution is required in the event of water and electrolyte imbalances.If constipation persists for a long time, you should seek advice and examination from a doctor before starting therapy.In infants and small children, the preparation should only be taken after consulting a doctor, as an inherited fructose intolerance may not yet have been recognized.

The medicine has no adverse effects on perception, judgment or the ability to react.

Pregnancy

There are no known harmful effects of lactulose during pregnancy and breastfeeding.The preparation can therefore also be taken during this time.

Notes

No prescription is required for this product.The laxative effect can occur after 2 to 10 hours; if the amounts are insufficient, it can take 24 to 48 hours before the first bowel movement.While taking the medication, care should be taken to eat a diet rich in fiber to support the laxative effect.Raw vegetable salads and whole grain products are particularly suitable.Consuming large amounts of fresh yogurt promotes the colonization of the colon with bifidus bacteria.Make sure you drink enough fluids of at least 2 liters daily.

For diabetics, the synthetic content of lactulose in digestible carbohydrates must be taken into account.100 milliliters contain a maximum of 17 grams, corresponding to 1.4 bread units (BE).
