Contraindications

Lactulose HEUMANN syrup must not be taken if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of the preparation.The medicine should also not be used if you have symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting and fever, as these symptoms can indicate serious illnesses such as intestinal obstruction or inflammation in the gastrointestinal area.In such cases you should seek medical advice immediately.In addition, the preparation must not be taken if you suffer from the rare hereditary form of fructose intolerance (hereditary fructose intolerance).

Dosage

Always take lactulose HEUMANN syrup exactly as described or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.Depending on the patient, the effect can take different amounts of time, from 2 to 10 hours to 1 to 2 days.The dosage depends on the area of application and can be adjusted individually.

For constipation, the recommended dose for adults is 5 to 10 grams (equivalent to 7.5 to 15 milliliters) once or twice daily.Children should take 3 to 6 grams (equivalent to 4.5 to 9 milliliters) once or twice a day.Higher doses may be required at the start of treatment, which may be reduced after 3 to 4 days.

For portocaval encephalopathy, adults should take 5 to 10 grams (equivalent to 7.5 to 15 milliliters) 3 to 4 times a day at the start of treatment.The dose can then be slowly increased to 20 to 30 grams (equivalent to 30 to 45 milliliters) 3 to 4 times a day to achieve two to three soft stools per day.There are no specific dosage information for children.

The duration of treatment depends on the course of the disease.Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and electrolyte loss.In such cases, inform your doctor.If you miss a dose, continue taking it as usual without increasing the dose.Stopping or interrupting treatment may affect the desired effect.

Intake

Measure out the required dose and mix the syrup with water or warm drinks such as coffee or tea.Alternatively, you can stir it into yogurt, muesli or porridge and take it with these foods.Close the dispenser after each withdrawal to avoid sticking.It can be taken regardless of meals.With a single dose to treat constipation, taking it in the morning after breakfast has proven to be particularly well tolerated.

Patient information

The preparation should not be taken if the water and electrolyte balance is disturbed.If constipation persists for a long time, you should seek advice and examination from a doctor before taking it.In infants and small children, the preparation should only be used after consulting a doctor, as an inherited fructose intolerance may not yet have been recognized.The medicine has no adverse effects on perception, judgment or the ability to react.

Other

The laxative effect can occur after 2 to 10 hours; if the amounts are insufficient, it can take 24 to 48 hours before the first bowel movement.While taking the medication, care should be taken to eat a diet rich in fiber, as this supports the laxative effect.Raw vegetable salads and whole grain products are particularly suitable.Consuming large amounts of fresh yogurt promotes the important colonization of the colon with bifidus bacteria.Make sure you drink enough fluids (at least 2 liters daily).For diabetics, the synthetic content of lactulose in digestible carbohydrates must be taken into account (100 milliliters contain a maximum of 17 grams, which corresponds to 1.4 bread units).
