This medicine contains the active ingredients calcium carbonate in an amount of 500 mg and 200 mg calcium ions.The following excipients are also included: microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, hypromellose, lactose-1-water, macrogol 6000, vegetable magnesium stearate, polyoxyethylene (8) monostearate, povidone K30, highly dispersed silicon dioxide, talc and titanium dioxide.

Area of application

This medicine is a phosphate binder used for elevated serum phosphate (hyperphosphatemia) in chronic kidney failure, especially in patients on dialysis treatment.No prescription is required for this product.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to calcium carbonate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.The medicine should also not be used if calcium concentrations in the blood are too high (hypercalcemia), low serum phosphate (hypophosphatemia), kidney stones containing calcium or if there is a lack of free hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice.An increase in calcium concentration can occur with an overactive parathyroid gland, vitamin D overdose, certain tumors, bone metastases, certain lung diseases or immobilization of limbs.

Dosage

Always take the medicine exactly as described or exactly as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist.The dosage depends on the level of serum phosphate levels.Adults usually take 1 to 3 tablets three times a day, although the maximum dose of 7 tablets (corresponding to 1400 mg calcium) should not be exceeded.There are no data available for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, therefore use cannot be recommended for these patients.

Therapy with this preparation is long-term therapy and requires regular medical monitoring.In the event of an overdose, symptoms such as muscle weakness, abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, vomiting, intense thirst, cardiac arrhythmias and loss of consciousness may occur.If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose, but continue taking the dose as prescribed.Do not interrupt or stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

Intake

The film-coated tablets should be taken whole with a little liquid immediately before or with meals.

Patient information

Particular caution is required in the case of impaired kidney function, kidney stones, kidney calcification, increased calcium excretion in the urine or reduced phosphate concentration in the blood.If additional calcium or alkalis are taken with food or other medicines, the calcium level in the blood and urine should be monitored.Drinking plenty of fluids can reduce the risk of kidney stones forming.Therapy requires regular monitoring of serum calcium and serum phosphate levels.

No studies have been conducted on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.There have been no reports of harmful effects of calcium during pregnancy and breastfeeding in humans.During pregnancy, serum calcium levels must be well controlled.

Other

The active ingredient calcium carbonate is converted into soluble calcium chloride in the stomach and is therefore bioavailable.In achlorhydria, solubility can be impaired and bioavailability reduced.However, bioavailability is largely guaranteed if the medicine is taken with food.If there is a family history of calcium-containing kidney stones, absorptive hypercalciuria should be ruled out.Treatment with the drug requires regular monitoring of serum calcium and serum phosphate levels.The calcium phosphate product should under no circumstances exceed 5.3 mmol per liter, in which case treatment should be discontinued.If there is chronic reduced kidney function and simultaneous intake of vitamin D preparations, serum phosphate and serum calcium levels must be checked.
