Instructions for use for Psyllium seeds (500 g)
Instructions for use of psyllium seeds
Psyllium seeds are a purely herbal laxative that is used for intestinal sluggishness and stool constipation. The swelling substances in psyllium stimulate intestinal activity and gently lead to emptying. This product is available without a prescription.
Areas of application
Psyllium seeds are used to treat constipation. They also help to make the stool softer when easier bowel emptying is desired, for example in the case of tears in the anal mucosa, hemorrhoids, after rectal-anal surgery, irritable bowel syndrome or during pregnancy.Psyllium seeds are also ideal for intestinal sluggishness during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as they have a gentle effect and do not cause habituation. They can also have a positive effect on blood lipid levels.
Dosage and application
Adolescents aged 12 and over and adults should take a teaspoon (approx. 5 g) of psyllium seeds several times a day.The seeds should be allowed to pre-soak in water and then taken with plenty of liquid. The duration of use depends on the type of symptoms and the course of the disease. If symptoms persist or recur regularly, a doctor should be consulted. There are no known symptoms of overdose.
Contraindications
Psyllium seeds must not be taken if there is hypersensitivity to the ingredients, if there are constrictions in the digestive tract, if there is intestinal obstruction or impending intestinal obstruction, or if diabetes mellitus is difficult to control.Children under 12 years of age should generally not use the medicine.According to current knowledge, there are no restrictions during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Side effects
Side effects have only occurred in exceptional cases. In individual cases, hypersensitivity reactions may occur.Allergic reactions may occur when using powdered drug.Any existing symptoms such as flatulence and a feeling of fullness may become more pronounced during the first few days of treatment, but will subside over the course of further treatment.
Composition
The medicinally active ingredient is psyllium. The seeds of the annual plantain plant Plantago psyllium L. (Plantago afra L.) combine with water to form swelling substances that have a regulating effect on constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
Mode of action
The psyllium seeds work because of their high mucus content, which can swell up to 40 times its original volume in water.Due to this increase in volume, the psyllium seeds make the intestinal contents more supple and voluminous, which stimulates intestinal movement and moves the intestinal contents through the body more quickly. The seed coats can also bind excess water in the stool, thereby solidifying it.
Important notes
Caution is advised if you are allergic to psyllium seeds. There may be medicines with which interactions occur. Therefore, before starting treatment with a new medicine, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist any other medicines you are already using. The absorption of medications taken at the same time can be delayed, so an interval of ½ to 1 hour should be maintained after taking medication. In insulin-dependent diabetics, a reduction in insulin dosage may be necessary.
Storage
The medicine should be stored away from heat, moisture and light, for example in a tightly closed container and in the dark.
