Instructions for use for CALCIGEN D 600 mg/400 IU chewable tablets, 100 pcs

Area of application

This medicine contains the two active ingredients calcium and vitamin D3.Calcium is an important component of bones and vitamin D3 improves the absorption of calcium from the intestine and its incorporation into the bones. It is used for:

Compensation for combined vitamin D and calcium deficiencies in elderly patients.Vitamin D and calcium supplementation as an adjunct to specific osteoporosis treatment in patients diagnosed with combined vitamin D and calcium deficiency or at high risk of such deficiencies.

Active ingredients / ingredients / ingredients

1 Chewable tablet contains 1500 mg calcium carbonate (corresponding to 600 mg calcium) and 4 mg colecalciferol dry concentrate (corresponding to 400 IU vitamin D3).Other ingredients are xylitol, mannitol, magnesium stearate, highly disperse silicon dioxide, pre-gelatinized corn starch, butylated hydroxytoluene (E321), medium-chain triglycerides, sucrose, gelatin, modified starch, sodium aluminum silicate and flavorings.

Contraindications

This product must not be taken if you are allergic to calcium carbonate, vitamin D or any of the other ingredients of this medicine. It is also not permitted to be taken if calcium concentrations in the blood are too high (hypercalcemia) and/or increased calcium excretion in the urine (hypercalcuria).Furthermore, the preparation must not be taken if there are conditions for hypercalcemia and/or hypercalcuria, such as overactive parathyroid glands, bone marrow disease (myeloma), a malignant bone tumor (bone metastases), kidney failure, kidney stones (nephrolithiasis), calcium deposits in the kidneys (nephrocalcinosis) or a vitamin D overdose (hypervitaminosis D).

Dosage

Always take this medicine exactly as described or exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. The usual dose for adults and the elderly is one tablet twice daily (e.g. one in the morning and one in the evening).Pregnant women should only take one tablet per day.During long-term treatment, calcium levels in urine and blood must be monitored. This is especially important if you develop kidney stones more often. The preparation is not suitable for use in children and adolescents.

The doctor decides on the duration of the treatment. If you have taken more than you should and notice signs of overdose, please stop taking it and consult your doctor immediately.Signs of overdose may include: dehydration, loss of appetite, increased thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disorders, abnormally increased urine output, bone pain, kidney stones.Chronic overdose can lead to vascular and organ calcification due to calcium deposits. In the event of a significant overdose, cardiac arrest may occur.

Do not take a double dose if you forget to take the previous dose.If you want to interrupt the treatment or end it prematurely, please consult your doctor. If you have any further questions about using this medicine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Intake

The chewable tablets should be chewed and then swallowed with a little liquid. In exceptional cases, e.g.B. in patients with chewing problems, the tablets can also be sucked after consulting the doctor.Pregnant and breastfeeding women should take this medicine two hours before or after meals to avoid possible interference with iron absorption.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.During long-term treatment with the preparation, serum calcium levels and renal function should be checked regularly by measuring serum creatinine. This review is particularly important in elderly patients and during concurrent treatment with cardiac glycosides (e.g. digoxin) and diuretics.Based on the results obtained, your doctor may recommend reducing your dose or even stopping treatment. However, the dose should be reduced or therapy temporarily interrupted if urinary calcium excretion exceeds 7.5 mmol/24 hours (300 mg/24 hours).

Before taking this preparation, the amount of vitamin D, calcium and alkali already taken must be taken into account, such as:B. Carbonate from other sources (e.g. dietary supplements or food). Since these products already contain vitamin D and calcium carbonate, additional intake of this preparation can lead to Burnett syndrome.Burnett syndrome (milk-alkaline syndrome) is a calcium metabolism disorder with an increase in blood calcium levels. It can be triggered by ingesting very large amounts of milk and/or calcium carbonate from other sources or by excessive use of antacids (medicines for stomach acid). This may lead to side effects as listed in section 4.Therefore, additional administration of this preparation must be carried out under strict medical supervision with regular checking of the calcium levels in the blood (calcaemia) and urine (calciuria).

Before taking it, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist if you suffer from kidney stones, an immune system disorder (sarcoidosis), your ability to move is restricted and you suffer from reduced bone mass (osteoporosis), if you are also taking other vitamin D3 or calcium-containing preparations or if you suffer from mild to moderate kidney dysfunction. If you have severe kidney impairment, you should not take this medicine. The preparation is not suitable for use in children and adolescents.

No effects on the ability to drive or use machines are expected.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.Pregnant and breastfeeding women should take this medicine two hours before or after meals to avoid possible interference with iron absorption.

The preparation can be used during pregnancy, but the daily intake should not exceed 1,500 mg calcium and 600 IU vitamin D.If you are pregnant, you should not take more than one tablet per day.Higher doses may be harmful to the unborn child. This preparation can be used during breastfeeding.Since calcium and vitamin D3 are excreted in breast milk, you must first consult your doctor whether your child is already receiving products that contain vitamin D3.

Notes

No prescription is required for this product. For information about risks and side effects, read the package leaflet and ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Other

If you have kidney failure, have your calcium and phosphate balance checked by a doctor. The amount of vitamin D taken should be taken into account when using other vitamin D medications.Since the medicine already contains vitamin D, additional use of vitamin D or calcium may only be carried out under strict medical supervision. In this case, it is essential to check blood and urine calcium levels weekly.
