What is cetirizine AL directly and what is it used for?

Cetirizine AL direct is an anti-allergic drug that contains the active ingredient cetirizine dihydrochloride.It is used to relieve nasal and eye symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as to relieve chronic hives (chronic idiopathic urticaria).The product is suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over.No prescription is required for this product.

How should cetirizine AL be taken directly?

Cetirizine AL direct should always be taken exactly according to the instructions in the package leaflet or after consulting a doctor or pharmacist.Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age take one lozenge (10 mg cetirizine dihydrochloride) daily.Children between 6 and 12 years of age take half a lozenge (5 mg cetirizine dihydrochloride) twice daily.Patients with impaired kidney function should take half a lozenge daily.

The lozenge should be allowed to slowly dissolve in the mouth and can be taken with or without water.The tablet can be divided into equal doses.The duration of use depends on the type, duration and course of the symptoms.If you have any questions about the duration of use, you should ask your pharmacist for advice.

What should you pay attention to when taking cetirizine AL?

If a larger amount of cetirizine AL has been taken directly than intended, a doctor should be informed immediately.Possible symptoms of overdose include confusion, diarrhea, dizziness, tiredness, headache, malaise, pupil dilation, itching, restlessness, sedation, sleepiness, lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat, tremor and urinary retention.

If a dose is missed, the next dose should be taken as usual without taking the missed dose.If treatment is stopped, pruritus (intense itching) and/or urticaria (hives) may reoccur in rare cases.

How should Cetirizine AL be stored directly?

Cetirizine AL directly should be kept out of the reach of children.The medicine must not be used after the expiry date stated on the packaging.It should be stored in the original packaging to protect the contents from moisture.Medicines should never be disposed of via wastewater.Ask your pharmacy how to properly dispose of the medicine.

What cetirizine AL contains

The active ingredient is cetirizine dihydrochloride.Each lozenge contains 10 mg cetirizine dihydrochloride.The other ingredients are Betadex, microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose powder, magnesium stearate (vegetable), sodium cyclamate, sodium dihydrogen citrate, povidone K 25 and apple flavor.

Contraindications

Cetirizine AL must not be taken directly if there is hypersensitivity to cetirizine dihydrochloride, hydroxyzine or other piperazine derivatives or any of the other ingredients of the drug.The medicine should also not be taken if you have severe kidney disease (severe impairment of kidney function with a creatinine clearance below 10 ml/min).

If you have a tendency to seizures, such as epilepsy, or impaired kidney function, you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking it.Children under 6 years of age should generally not take the medicine.Pregnant and breastfeeding women should speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking it.

Side effects

Possible side effects of cetirizine AL directly are gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, tiredness, sleepiness, restlessness, sore throat, dry mouth, runny nose, discomfort, skin hypersensitivity reactions such as itching and rash, malaise and general weakness.If you experience any discomfort or changes during treatment, you should inform a doctor or pharmacist.

Mode of action

The active ingredient cetirizine dihydrochloride helps with allergies and relieves itching.It suppresses the effects of the body's own substances histamine and prostaglandins by inhibiting the release of these substances from the mast cells and displacing them from their binding sites.Histamine and prostaglandins play an important role in the development of inflammation and allergic reactions.

Important notes

Caution is advised if you are allergic to the sweetener cyclamate (E number E 952).In general, before treatment with a new medicine, any other medicine that is already being used should be told to the doctor or pharmacist.This also applies to medicines that you bought yourself, only used occasionally or that were used some time ago.

Patient information

If you have impaired kidney function, you should speak to a doctor before taking it.A lower dose may be required.If you have difficulty urinating or have epilepsy, you should also speak to a doctor before taking it.The medicine must be stopped 3 days before an allergy skin test is carried out.

In clinical studies, cetirizine at the recommended dose showed no evidence of impairment of attention, reactions and the ability to drive.However, the recommended dose should not be exceeded and the reaction to the drug should be carefully monitored.The simultaneous use of alcohol or other drugs that depress the central nervous system can further impair attention and reactions.

Pregnancy

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should speak directly to a doctor or pharmacist before taking cetirizine AL .Its use should be avoided by pregnant women, as accidental ingestion does not rule out harmful effects on the fetus.Breastfeeding women should not take the medicine because cetirizine passes into breast milk.
