What is Calcivit D Forte and what is it used for?

Calcivit D Forte is a mineral preparation with the active ingredients calcium and vitamin D3 (colecalciferol).It is used to compensate for a simultaneous deficiency of calcium and vitamin D in the elderly.It also supports specific osteoporosis therapy in patients who have such a deficiency or are at high risk of it.

Active ingredients and other ingredients

Each effervescent tablet contains 1,000 mg calcium, equivalent to 2,500 mg calcium carbonate, and 8.8 mg colecalciferol dry concentrate, equivalent to 880 IU vitamin D3.Other ingredients are all-rac-alpha-tocopherol, citric acid, dimeticone, gelatin, lactose monohydrate, macrogol 6000, magnesium stearate (vegetable), corn starch, methyl cellulose, sodium cyclamate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, povidone K 25, saccharin sodium, highly dispersed silicon dioxide, hydrogenated soybean oil (Ph.Eur.), sucrose and flavorings(Orange).

Dosage and application

The recommended daily dose is one effervescent tablet, which should be dissolved in a glass of water and drunk immediately.The duration of treatment should be discussed individually with a doctor or pharmacist.It is important not to exceed the indicated dosage unless directed by a doctor.

Contraindications

Calcivit D Forte must not be taken if you are allergic to the active ingredients or certain excipients, if you have elevated calcium levels in the blood or urine, if you have kidney stones, impaired kidney function, certain parathyroid diseases, vitamin D overdose, myeloma, bone metastases, immobilization osteoporosis and sarcoidosis.The product is not suitable for children and adolescents.

Side effects

Possible side effects include increased calcium levels in the blood or urine, hypersensitivity reactions, itching, rash, hives, flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.In rare cases, systemic allergic reactions may occur.If kidney function is impaired, the risk of increased amounts of phosphate in the blood, kidney stones and increased amounts of calcium in the kidneys may be increased.

Interactions with other medicines

Calcivit D Forte can influence the effect of certain medicines, including cardiac glycosides, thiazide diuretics, tetracyclines, bisphosphonates, sodium fluoride, fluoroquinolones, ketoconazole, quinolones, cephalosporins, iron and zinc preparations, estramustine, thyroid hormones, strontium ranelate, aluminum and bismuth salts, orlistat, ion exchange resins, laxatives,Rifampicin, phenytoin, barbiturates and systemic corticosteroids.It is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medicines.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

During pregnancy, the daily intake of 1,500 mg calcium and 600 IU vitamin D should not be exceeded.Calcivit D Forte should not be taken during pregnancy because of the high dose of vitamin D.The preparation can be taken during breastfeeding as calcium and vitamin D pass into breast milk.

Storage

The medicine should be stored at a temperature not exceeding 25°C and kept in the original packaging to protect it from moisture.After opening it should be used within one month.

Advice for diabetics

One effervescent tablet contains 0.03 bread units (BE).Diabetics should consider the sugar content.
