Instructions for use for BIFITERAL Syrup, 1000 ml
Instructions for use of Bifiteral Syrup
Bifiteral syrup is a laxative that contains the active ingredient lactulose. It is used to treat constipation, to ease bowel movements in certain conditions such as hemorrhoids or after rectal surgery, and to prevent and treat portocaval encephalopathy, a disorder of brain function in chronic liver disease.
No prescription is required for this product.
Active ingredient and ingredients
The active ingredient in Bifiteral syrup is lactulose. In addition, due to the manufacturing process, the product contains small amounts of other sugars such as lactose, galactose, epilactose and fructose. These additives have almost no nutritional value because they are only absorbed to a small extent from the intestines into the body.
Areas of application
Bifiteral syrup is used for:
Constipation that cannot be adequately controlled by high-fiber diets and other general measures.
Conditions that require easier bowel movements, such as hemorrhoids or rectal surgery.
Prevention and treatment of portocaval encephalopathy, a disorder of brain function associated with chronic liver disease.
Dosage and application
The dosage of Bifiteral syrup depends on the area of application. For adults, the usual dose for constipation is 7.5 to 15 ml once or twice a day. Children should take 4.5 to 9 ml once or twice a day.In the case of portocaval encephalopathy, the dose may be higher and should be individually adjusted by the doctor.
Bifiteral syrup can be taken without regard to meals. The dose can be taken undiluted or mixed with water or warm drinks. If taken undiluted, the syrup should be swallowed directly and not kept in the mouth for any longer.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Bifiteral Syrup can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include diarrhea, bloating, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.Disturbances in the electrolyte balance can occur with long-term use.
Contraindications
Bifiteral syrup must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to one of the components, if you have intestinal obstruction, intestinal perforation or an increased risk of intestinal perforation, or if you have fructose intolerance or mucous sugar intolerance.
Special Notes
Patients with diabetes should note that Bifiteral Syrup contains small amounts of digestible carbohydrates due to the manufacturing process.Long-term use or higher doses may require adjustment of antidiabetic medication.
During treatment with Bifiteral Syrup, sufficient fluids should be consumed to support the laxative effect. If symptoms persist for a long time or if symptoms worsen, a doctor should be consulted.
Storage
Bifiteral syrup should be kept out of the reach of children. The product must not be used after the expiry date stated on the label.
