Description

Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide composed of galactose and fructose.It is a laxative that cannot be digested in the small intestine and is therefore transported unchanged into the large intestine.There it is broken down by intestinal bacteria into acids, which retain water in the large intestine.This leads to an increase in intestinal volume and indirectly triggers the stimulus to empty.In addition, lactulose can be used in high doses to treat brain function disorders caused by liver disease.

Areas of application

Lactulose is used for constipation, which cannot be adequately controlled by a high-fiber diet and other general measures.It is also suitable for diseases that require easier bowel movements.In addition, it is used to prevent and treat portocaval encephalopathy, i.e. disorders of brain function resulting from chronic liver diseases, especially liver cirrhosis.

The medicinally active ingredient is lactulose.3.25 g lactulose, fructose as an excipient, galactose as an excipient, lactose as an excipient and 1.3 g total carbohydrates as an excipient are included.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be taken if you suffer from intestinal obstruction, if you suffer from galactose intolerance or if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Dosage

Always take the medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.The dosage must vary depending on the area of application and can only serve as a guide.For constipation, the starting dose for adults and adolescents is 15-30 ml daily, either as a single dose or in two divided doses.The dose can be adjusted depending on the effect.For children, the daily dose varies depending on age.In portocaval encephalopathy, different dosages are provided for acute and chronic cases.The laxative effect can occur after just 2-10 hours, but it can also take 1-2 days until the first bowel movement.

Intake

The medicine is intended to be taken orally.Measure the dose required for you.The measured amount can be undiluted or mixed with water and warm drinks or stirred into yoghurt, muesli or porridge and taken with these foods.It can be taken regardless of meals.In case of constipation, it is recommended to take it in the morning after breakfast.
