Description

Lactuflor is a synthetic disaccharide consisting of galactose and fructose.It is a laxative that cannot be digested in the small intestine and therefore passes unchanged into the large intestine.There it is fermented by naturally occurring bacteria into various acids that stimulate intestinal movements and transport increased water into the intestines.This results in relief from constipation as the volume of softened stool increases and the defecation reflex is triggered.In addition, Lactuflor is able to reduce the ammonia concentration in the blood by preventing the reabsorption of ammonia from the intestine into the bloodstream.This is particularly important in the case of brain function disorders associated with liver disease.

Areas of application

Lactuflor is used for constipation that cannot be adequately controlled by a high-fiber diet and other general measures, as well as for diseases that require easier bowel movements.In addition, it is used to prevent and treat portocaval encephalopathy, i.e. disorders of brain function resulting from chronic liver diseases, especially liver cirrhosis.

Active ingredients / ingredients / ingredients

The medicinally active ingredient is lactulose.3.25 g lactulose, fructose as an excipient, galactose as an excipient, lactose as an excipient and 1.3 g total carbohydrates as an excipient are contained in the preparation.The other ingredients are citric acid, cherry flavor and purified water.

Dosage

The dosage of Lactuflor must vary depending on the area of application.For constipation, the starting dose for adults and adolescents is 15-30 ml daily, either as a single dose or in two divided doses.If no effect is seen after 3 days, the dose can be increased twice.For children, the daily dose varies depending on age.In the case of portocaval encephalopathy, the dosage depends on the severity of the disease.It is important to adjust the dose individually to achieve soft stools.The laxative effect can occur after just 2-10 hours, but it can also take 1-2 days until the first bowel movement.

Intake

Lactuflor is for oral use.The measured amount can be undiluted or mixed with water and warm drinks or stirred into yoghurt, muesli or porridge and taken with these foods.It can be taken regardless of meals.No prescription is required for this product.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be taken if you suffer from intestinal obstruction, have galactose intolerance or are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Patient information

Particular caution is required when taking the medication if you suffer from inflammation in the gastrointestinal area or water and salt balance disorders.If constipation symptoms persist for a long time, you should seek advice and examination from your doctor before starting therapy with the product.In infants and small children, the preparation should only be given after consulting a doctor, as an inherited fructose intolerance may not yet have been recognized.The medicine has no or only a negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.The medicine can be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Notes

During treatment, attention should be paid to a diet rich in fiber, as this supports the laxative effect.Raw vegetable salads and whole grain products are particularly suitable.Consuming large amounts of fresh yogurt promotes the important colonization of the colon with bifidus bacteria.Make sure you drink enough fluids (at least 2 liters daily).If you have diabetes, the digestible carbohydrate content of lactulose must be taken into account.
