Description

Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide consisting of galactose and fructose.It is a laxative that cannot be digested in the small intestine and is therefore transported unchanged into the large intestine.There it is broken down by intestinal bacteria into acids, which retain water in the large intestine.This leads to an increase in the volume of the intestinal contents and indirectly triggers the stimulus to empty.Lactulose can also lower blood ammonia levels by preventing ammonia from being reabsorbed from the intestines into the bloodstream.This is particularly important in the case of brain function disorders associated with liver disease.

Areas of application

Lactulose is used for constipation, which cannot be adequately controlled by a high-fiber diet and other general measures.It can also be used for conditions that require easier bowel movements.In addition, lactulose is used in high doses to prevent and treat portocaval encephalopathy, i.e. disorders of brain function resulting from chronic liver diseases, especially liver cirrhosis.

The medicinally active ingredient is lactulose.Other ingredients include fructose, galactose, lactose and total carbohydrates as excipients.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be taken if you suffer from intestinal obstruction, if you suffer from galactose intolerance or if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Dosage

The dosage of lactulose depends on the respective area of application and should always be taken after consultation with your doctor or pharmacist.For constipation, the starting dose for adults and adolescents is 15-30 ml daily, which can be adjusted depending on the effect.Children receive different doses depending on their age.For portocaval encephalopathy, the dosage varies depending on the severity of the disease.

Lactulose is used orally.The measured amount can be taken undiluted or mixed with water, warm drinks or food and taken with these.It can be taken regardless of meals.

During treatment with lactulose, attention should be paid to a diet rich in fiber to support the laxative effect.Raw vegetable salads and whole grain products are particularly suitable.Consuming large amounts of fresh yogurt promotes the colonization of the colon with bifidus bacteria.Make sure you drink enough fluids.If you have diabetes, the digestible carbohydrate content of lactulose must be taken into account.
