Area of application

The nicorette® chewing gum 2 mg freshmint is used to treat tobacco addiction by alleviating withdrawal symptoms and supporting smoking cessation.Also to reduce cigarette consumption in order to quit smoking.

Smokers who are currently unable to completely quit smoking immediately may initially use chewing gum to reduce their cigarette consumption.The medicine is intended for smokers who smoked up to 20 cigarettes per day before treatment.Additional advice and supportive measures can increase the success rate.

Mode of action

The therapeutic nicotine is absorbed through the oral mucosa.Nicotine substitution alleviates the desire to smoke and withdrawal symptoms.

The nicorette® chewing gum 2 mg freshmint contains the following active ingredients and excipients:

10 mg nicotine polacriline (1:4), 2 mg nicotine, 8 mg polacriline, acesulfame potassium, arabic gum, carnauba wax, chewing gum base, butylated hydroxytoluene, levomenthol, light magnesium oxide, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, peppermint oil, titanium dioxide, 608 mg xylitol.

Contraindications

Nicorette chewing gum 2 mg freshmint must not be used if you are allergic to nicotine, levomenthol, peppermint oil, butylhydroxytoluene (E 321) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine mentioned.Non-smokers and occasional smokers who smoke one cigarette per day or less should also not use chewing gum.

Dosage

The recommended dosage for the nicorette® chewing gum 2 mg freshmint is a total of at least 3 months:

1 Piece per hour, maximum 16 pieces per day, with 8 to 12 pieces as a guideline.4 to 6 weeks after starting treatment, the number of chewing gums per day should be gradually reduced.The first attempt to stop chewing gum should be made when the average daily consumption over the last week has been 1 - 2 pieces.

Intake

1 Piece of Nicorette chewing gum 2 mg freshmint is chewed for around 30 minutes with breaks to release the nicotine from the chewing mass.It is important to chew the gum slowly.You should avoid chewing the gum quickly and intensively so that the nicotine is not released too quickly.Chew the gum until the taste intensifies, then push it into the cheek pocket until the taste subsides and start chewing again.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor in advance if you have any of the following conditions: heart attack or stroke in the last 3 months, chest pain, heart disease, high blood pressure, severe or moderate liver disease, severe kidney disease, diabetes, overactive thyroid, adrenal tumor, stomach or duodenal ulcer, inflammation of the esophagus.

Your doctor will weigh the risks of nicotine replacement therapy against those of continuing to smoke.High levels of nicotine in the blood can occur if you smoke soon after chewing gum.People who wear dentures may have difficulty chewing.Doses of nicotine tolerated by adult smokers can cause severe symptoms of intoxication in young children.

Nicotine chewing gum must not be used in children under 12 years of age.Only use nicotine chewing gum in young people with a doctor's recommendation.

The medicine has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

It is very important to stop smoking during pregnancy.If you are unable to do this, you should only use the medicine after consulting your doctor or pharmacist.

Use should be avoided while breastfeeding as nicotine passes into breast milk and may affect your child.If your doctor has recommended its use, you should use the gum immediately after breastfeeding and not in the last two hours before breastfeeding.

Smoking can have adverse effects on female and male fertility.If possible, women who want to have children should neither smoke nor take nicotine replacement therapy.
