Instructions for use of Polysept solution

Polysept solution is an antiseptic used to disinfect intact external skin or to antiseptic the mucous membrane.Areas of application include preparation before operations, biopsies, injections, punctures, blood samples and bladder catheterizations.It is also used for antiseptic wound treatment, for burns and for infected and superinfected skin diseases.

Active ingredients and ingredients

The active ingredient of Polysept solution is povidone-iodine.Each milliliter of the solution contains 100 mg of povidone-iodine, which corresponds to 10% available iodine.The other ingredients are sodium hydroxide and purified water.

Areas of application

Polysept solution is used for a single application to disinfect the intact outer skin or to antiseptic the mucous membrane.This includes preparation before surgery, biopsies, injections, punctures, blood draws and bladder catheterizations.For repeated, time-limited use, it is used for antiseptic wound treatment, burns and infected and superinfected skin diseases.

Contraindications

Polysept solution must not be used if you are allergic to iodine or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.Its use is also contraindicated in the case of an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or other existing thyroid diseases, in the very rare chronic skin inflammation dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring, as well as in the case of planned or carried out radiotherapy of the thyroid gland with iodine (radioiodine therapy) until the end of the treatment.

Dosage and application

Polysept solution can be used once or several times a day.It is intended for external use undiluted and in dilutions.The solution should be applied to the area to be treated until completely wetted.The antiseptic film that forms when it dries can be easily washed off with water.

For skin disinfection or antiseptic of the mucous membrane, for example before surgical procedures, biopsies, injections, punctures, blood samples and bladder catheterizations, Polysept solution is used undiluted.The exposure time is at least 1 minute for skin with few sebaceous glands and at least 10 minutes for skin rich in sebaceous glands.The skin should be kept moist with the undiluted preparation throughout the entire exposure time.

Polysept solution can be diluted for antiseptic rinses, washes and baths.The following dilutions are recommended as guideline values: Rinses as part of wound treatment and perioperative infection prophylaxis 1:2 to 1:20, antiseptic washes 1:2 to 1:25, antiseptic partial baths approx. 1:25 and antiseptic full baths approx. 1:100.Normal tap water is suitable for dilution.The dilutions should always be made fresh and used as soon as possible.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Polysept solution can have side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include skin hypersensitivity reactions, skin irritation, acute general allergic reactions, hyperthyroidism, electrolyte and serum osmolarity disorders and impairment of kidney function.

Storage

Keep Polysept solution out of the reach of children.This medicine does not require any special storage conditions.Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the packaging.The shelf life after opening the container is 12 months.
