Directions for use of the article Lactulose STADA Syrup Indications: - Constipation which cannot be sufficiently influenced by a diet rich in fibre and other general measures. - Facilitation of bowel evacuation and softening of stools in certain diseases, e.g. painful anal disorders. - Prevention and treatment of portocaval encephalopathy (brain damage caused by liver disease). Dosage and directions for use: - Children and adolescents up to 18 years: 4.5-9 ml 1-2 times daily, regardless of meal. - Adults: 7.5-15 ml 1-2 times daily, regardless of the meal. - Adults with portocaval encephalopathy: 7.5-15 ml 3-4 times daily, regardless of the meal. - Adults with portocaval encephalopathy to achieve two to three soft stools per day: 30-45 ml 3-4 times daily regardless of meal. Contraindications: - Hypersensitivity to the ingredients. - Intestinal obstruction. - Inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases that are acute. - Disturbances of the fluid and salt balance. - Disturbance of sugar absorption. - Pregnancy and breast-feeding (after consultation with a doctor or under medical supervision). Side effects: - Gastrointestinal complaints, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and flatulence. - Disturbances of the salt balance. Composition: - Active substance: lactulose (3.335 g). - Excipients: Fructose, lactose-1-water, galactose and purified water. Mode STADA of action: - The active ingredient lactulose is broken down by the bacteria naturally found in the large intestine and changes the acid-base balance, stimulating the intestinal wall to move more. - This makes it easier for the intestinal contents to be removed and softened, resulting in easier bowel emptying. - Lactulose also lowers the concentration of ammonia in the blood by preventing the reabsorption of ammonia from the intestine into the bloodstream. Important notes: - Laxatives should only be used for short periods of time to avoid chronic constipation and other problems. - Laxatives are not suitable for weight loss. - In case of intolerance to fructose, galactose or lactose, the sugar content should be taken into account. - Interactions with other medicinal products are possible.
