Folic acid - an essential B vitamin
Folic acid is a vitamin from the B vitamin group. The name comes from the Latin word “folium” (leaf) because leafy vegetables such as broccoli, lettuce and spinach are important sources of folic acid.Adequate intake with food is important because the body cannot produce folic acid itself and has little storage capacity.
Possible symptoms of folic acid deficiency
The best-known consequence of a folic acid deficiency is anemia, as the production of red blood cells is impaired.Other signs and symptoms can include: irritability and depressive mood, weakening of the body's defenses, unwanted childlessness due to reduced fertility, growth retardation in children and adolescents and an increased level of homocysteine in the blood.
Causes of folic acid deficiency
A folic acid deficiency can arise from insufficient intake from food, for example from eating too few vegetables or from one-sided diets and poor food preparation. An increased need for folic acid, such as during pregnancy, breastfeeding, growth phases or chronic blood loss, can also lead to a deficiency.Certain intestinal diseases such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and celiac disease can affect the absorption of folic acid.In addition, certain medications such as methotrexate, antiepileptic drugs, drugs against infections or malaria, as well as the “contraceptive pill” and alcohol can promote folic acid deficiency.
