Information for use with the article Thioctacid 600 HR Film-coated tablets: Thioctacid 600 HR contains the active substance alpha-lipoic acid and is used for the treatment of paraesthesia in diabetic nerve damage (polyneuropathy). It is a substance formed in the body's own metabolism that has antioxidant properties and protects the nerve cell from reactive degradation products. Thioctacid 600 HR must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to alpha-lipoic acid or any of the other ingredients of the medicine. No special precautions are required when taking the medicine. An altered odour of the urine may occur after use, but this has no clinical significance. It is recommended to take Thioctacid 600 HR unchewed and with sufficient liquid on an empty stomach to facilitate the passage of alpha-lipoic acid into the bloodstream. The duration of use depends on the type of symptoms and the course of the disease. Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach and intestinal pain, diarrhoea, skin rash, hives, itching, dizziness, changes in taste sensation and hypoglycaemia. Thioctacid 600 HR should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be stored above 25°C. Finally, care should be taken not to use the medicinal product after the stated expiry date.
