Calcivit D® effervescent tablets is a medicine that affects bone structure and mineralization.It contains the active ingredients calcium and vitamin D3.Calcium is an essential component of bones, while vitamin D3 improves the absorption of calcium from the intestines and its incorporation into the bones.

Areas of application

Calcivit D® effervescent tablets are used in cases of proven calcium and vitamin D3 deficiency and to support the treatment of osteoporosis.It is also suitable for the treatment of elderly patients with combined vitamin D and calcium deficiency.It can also be used as an adjunct to osteoporosis treatment when vitamin D and calcium levels are too low or there is a high risk of deficiency.

1 Effervescent tablet contains:

600 mg calcium (as calcium carbonate)

10 Micrograms colecalciferol (vitamin D3, equivalent to 400 IU as colecalciferol dry concentrate)

Other ingredients: all-rac-alpha-tocopherol, malic acid, citric acid, colloidal silicon dioxide, maltodextrin, medium-chain triglycerides, sodium ascorbate, sodium carbonate, sodium cyclamate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, saccharin sodium [Ph.Eur.], starch, modified (corn), sucrose, lemon flavor (consisting of mannitol [Ph.Eur.], maltodextrin,D-glucono-1,5-lactone, sorbitol [Ph.Eur], arabic gum, lemon flavor)

Contraindications

Calcivit D® effervescent tablets must not be taken if you are allergic to calcium carbonate, colecalciferol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.Its use is also contraindicated if the calcium concentration in the blood is too high (hypercalcemia) and/or increased calcium excretion in the urine (hypercalciuria), as well as in diseases or conditions that lead to an increased calcium content in the blood.This also applies to severe impairment of kidney function, kidney stones, kidney tissue calcification and excessive vitamin D levels.

Dosage

The recommended dose for adults is one effervescent tablet twice daily, equivalent to 1200 mg calcium and 800 IU vitamin D. Pregnant women should not take more than one effervescent tablet daily.The effervescent tablet is dissolved in a glass of water and drunk immediately.It should be taken in the morning and evening.The duration of use is determined by the doctor.

The doctor decides how long the treatment will last.The medicine is not suitable for use in children and adolescents.A serum calcium check should be carried out every 3 - 6 months.

If you have taken more medicine than you should, please stop taking it and consult your doctor immediately.Signs of overdose may include dehydration, loss of appetite, increased thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disorders, increased urine output, bone pain, kidney stones and, in the case of a significant overdose, cardiac arrest.

Do not take a double dose if you forget to take the previous dose.If you want to stop treatment early, please talk to your doctor first.

Intake

The effervescent tablet is dissolved in a glass of water and drunk immediately.You should take the medicine in the morning and evening.

Patient information

Particular caution is required when taking the drug, especially in elderly patients and during simultaneous treatment with cardiac glycosides and diuretics.Serum calcium levels and kidney function should be checked regularly.Before taking the drug, consider the amount of vitamin D, calcium and alkali already taken from other sources.An additional administration of the drug should be carried out under strict medical supervision with regular checking of the calcium levels in the blood and urine.

Before taking the medicine, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist if you suffer from kidney stones, an immune system disorder (sarcoidosis), have limited mobility and suffer from osteoporosis, are taking other vitamin D3 or calcium-containing preparations at the same time or suffer from kidney dysfunction.

Pregnancy

Before taking/using any medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacy for advice.The medicine can be used during pregnancy, but the daily intake should not exceed 1,500 mg calcium and 600 IU vitamin D. If you are pregnant, you should therefore not take more than one effervescent tablet per day.Higher doses may be harmful to the unborn child.

The medicine can be used during breastfeeding.Since calcium and vitamin D3 are excreted in breast milk, you must first consult your doctor whether your child is already receiving products that contain vitamin D3.Pregnant and breastfeeding women should take the medicine two hours before or after meals to avoid possible interference with iron absorption.

Notes

Calcivit D® effervescent tablets contain sucrose, sorbitol and sodium.Please note that dairy products have a high calcium content.One liter of milk can contain up to 1,200 mg of calcium.This should be taken into account when taking Calcivit D® effervescent tablets.Oxalic acid (found in spinach and rhubarb) and phytic acid (found in whole grain products) can inhibit calcium absorption by forming insoluble complexes with calcium ions.Patients should not take calcium-containing medicines for 2 hours after consuming such foods.
