Calcium-Sandoz® D Osteo chewable tablets contain calcium and vitamin D3, which are important for bone development and bone health.The preparation is taken to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiency in older people and as an adjunct to support specific osteoporosis therapy in patients with an increased risk of vitamin D and calcium deficiency.

Mode of action

Calcium is an important mineral that forms hard tissue in the body and is therefore essential for the formation and growth of bones and teeth.Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract into the blood and regulates calcium metabolism, thereby increasing the deposition of calcium in the bones.

Calcium-Sandoz® D Osteo chewable tablets contain the active ingredients calcium and colecalciferol (vitamin D3).One chewable tablet contains 1,250 mg calcium carbonate (corresponding to 500 mg calcium) and 10.0 mg colecalciferol dry concentrate (powder form) (corresponding to 25 micrograms colecalciferol = 1,000 IU vitamin D3).

Other ingredients are isomalt (E 953), xylitol, sorbitol (Ph.Eur.) (E 420), citric acid, sodium dihydrogen citrate, magnesium stearate (Ph.Eur.) [pflanzlich], carmellose sodium (Ph.Eur.), orange flavor “CPB” and orange flavor “CVT”, aspartame (E 951), acesulfame potassium,Sodium ascorbate, all-rac-tocopherol, starch, modified (corn), sucrose (sugar), medium chain triglycerides, colloidal silica and silica hydrate.

Contraindications

Calcium-Sandoz® D Osteo chewable tablets must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to calcium, vitamin D or any of the other ingredients, if you have too high a calcium content in your blood or urine, if you have calcium-containing kidney stones, if the function of your kidneys is disturbed or if the vitamin D content of your blood is too high.

Dosage

The recommended dose for adults and older people is one chewable tablet daily (corresponding to 500 mg calcium and 1,000 IU vitamin D3).The tablet must be chewed before swallowing.It can be taken at any time of the day, regardless of meals.

An overdose can lead to hypervitaminosis, hypercalcemia with muscle weakness as well as increased thirst, abnormally increased urine output, abdominal pain, constipation, nausea and vomiting.If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor immediately.

Intake

The tablet must be chewed before swallowing.It can be taken independently of meals and at any time of the day.

Patient information

Calcium-Sandoz D Osteo contains aspartame, sorbitol, isomalt and sucrose.Aspartame is a source of phenylalanine and can be harmful if you have phenylketonuria.Please only take Calcium-Sandoz D Osteo after consulting your doctor if you know that you suffer from an intolerance to certain sugars.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

If you are pregnant, you must not take Calcium-Sandoz D Osteo.During pregnancy, the daily dose of calcium should not be higher than 1,500 mg and the daily dose of vitamin D3 should not be higher than 600 IU.Long-term overdoses of calcium and vitamin D during pregnancy must be avoided as this can lead to high calcium levels in the blood and have negative effects on the unborn child.

Calcium-Sandoz D Osteo can be used during breastfeeding.Since calcium and vitamin D are excreted in breast milk, please consult your doctor first to see whether your child is already taking preparations containing vitamin D.
