What is an allergy and how does it occur?

In the case of an allergy, our body's immune system reacts defensively to foreign substances that actually do not pose a health risk, such as pollen, house dust mites or animal hair.In order to get rid of these allergens, certain cells of the body's defense system, so-called mast cells, release the messenger substance histamine.This histamine is responsible for allergic symptoms.

Symptoms of an allergy

An allergy usually manifests itself through typical symptoms that can occur individually or together and to varying degrees.These include, among other things, itchy nose, runny nose, watery and burning eyes, fatigue or lack of concentration.

How does Momekort® work?

Momekort® contains mometasone furoate, a substance from the group of glucocorticoids.The nasal spray containing cortisone has a local anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effect and thus combats the symptoms of nasal allergies.Momekort® works almost exclusively locally and does not make you tired.Eye drops containing the active ingredients azelastine can be used to additionally treat allergic eye symptoms.

Treat hay fever early

The symptoms of hay fever should be treated early.Otherwise there is a risk that the allergy will spread from the nose to the deeper respiratory tract.This can develop into chronic bronchitis or allergic asthma.Doctors refer to this as a “floor change.”Early treatment can specifically counteract hay fever and noticeably improve quality of life.

Area of application

Mometasone furoate is used to treat the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) in adults, provided the hay fever has been initially diagnosed by a doctor.Hay fever, which occurs at certain times of the year, is an allergic reaction caused by inhaling pollen from trees, grasses and also mold and fungal spores.Mometasone furoate reduces the swelling and irritation in your nose, thereby relieving sneezing, itching and a stuffy or runny nose caused by hay fever.

No prescription is required for this product.

Mode of action

Momekort® contains mometasone furoate, a substance that has anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects.Momekort® therefore works against the symptoms of nasal allergies.

0.052 mg mometasone furoate 1-water, 0.041 mg mometasone, 0.05 mg mometasone furoate, carmellose, sodium salt, cellulose, microcrystalline, citric acid 1-water, glycerol, sodium citrate, polysorbate 80, water, purified, benzalkonium chloride solution, 0.02 mg benzalkonium chloride.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be used if you are allergic to mometasone furoate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.It should also not be used if you have an untreated infection in your nose, such as herpes, as using mometasone furoate may make the infection worse.You must wait for the infection to clear before you start using the nasal spray.Even after nose surgery or a nose injury, you must not use the nasal spray until your nose has healed.

Dosage

Always use this medicine exactly as described or exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.The recommended dose is 2 sprays into each nostril once daily.Once your symptoms are under control, you can reduce the number of sprays to 1 spray in each nostril once a day.If your symptoms worsen, increase the dose to 2 sprays in each nostril once daily.

Some patients experience relief of symptoms as early as 12 hours after the first dose of mometasone furoate;however, the full therapeutic benefit may not be achieved within the first 2 days.If you suffer severely from hay fever, treatment should begin a few days before the start of the pollen season.At the end of the pollen season, your hay fever symptoms should improve and treatment should no longer be necessary.

Seek medical advice if there is no or insufficient improvement in your symptoms after 14 days at the latest.Mometasone furoate should not be used for more than 3 months without medical advice.

It is important that you use the dose given here or as prescribed by your doctor.Using more or less may make your symptoms worse.Tell your doctor if you accidentally use more than you should.If you use steroids for a long time or in large amounts, in rare cases they can affect some of your hormones.

If you forget to use your nasal spray on time, use it as soon as you notice and then continue as before.Do not use a double dose if you have forgotten the previous application.

Intake

Your nasal spray has a protective cap that protects the nose piece and keeps it clean.Remember to take them off before using the spray and then put them back on again.Shake the bottle before each use.Do not pierce the nasal applicator (nozzle opening) with a needle or other sharp object.

Shake the bottle well and remove the protective cap.Gently blow your nose to clear the nostrils.Close one nostril and insert the nose piece into the other nostril.Tilt your head slightly forward and hold the bottle upright.Begin to breathe in gently through your nose and as you breathe in, spray a spray of fine mist into your nose by pressing down once with your fingers.Breathe out through your mouth.If necessary, repeat the last step to administer a 2nd spray into the same nostril.Take the nosepiece out of this nostril and breathe out through your mouth.Repeat the previous steps for the other nostril.After use, clean the nose piece carefully with a clean tissue and put the protective cap back on.

It is important to clean the nasal spray regularly, otherwise it may not work properly.Do not try to expand the exit opening of the nosepiece with a needle or other sharp object, as this will damage the nosepiece and prevent you from receiving the correct dose of medicine.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you have or have ever had tuberculosis, any other infection, are taking other corticosteroid medicines, both oral and injection, or have cystic fibrosis.

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist while using this product if your immune system is not working well and you come into contact with people who have had measles or chickenpox, you have an infection of the nose or throat, you are using the medicine for several months or longer, or you have persistent irritation of the nose or throat.

If you experience blurred vision or other vision problems, contact your doctor.When corticosteroid nasal sprays are used in high doses for long periods of time, side effects may occur from the drug absorbed into the body.If your eyes are itchy or irritated, your doctor may recommend other treatments along with this product.

The medicine must not be used in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

There is no information known about the influence of the drug on the ability to drive or use machines.

Pregnancy

There is little or no information regarding the use of mometasone furoate in pregnant women.It is not known whether mometasone furoate passes into breast milk.If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
