Quickly effective - Sumatriptan even for recurring migraine headaches

Migraines are thought to be caused by an imbalance in serotonin in the brain, leading to dilated blood vessels and activated nerves.Sumatriptan helps by narrowing blood vessels and reducing inflammation.This relieves headaches and accompanying symptoms.The effect starts after just 30 minutes.Sumatriptan is also effective for recurrent migraine pain, but should only be used after a doctor's diagnosis and no more than 10 days per month.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any of the other ingredients, have heart problems, have poor circulation in the legs, have had a stroke, have high blood pressure, have severe liver disease, are taking it together with other migraine medicines or MAO-inhibitors.

Dosage

Take the medicine exactly as described or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.Sumatriptan should only be taken when a migraine headache begins.The recommended dose for adults between 18 and 65 years is 1 film-coated tablet.Some patients require 100 mg sumatriptan.Do not take more than 300 mg of sumatriptan in 24 hours.If the first tablet has no effect, do not take a second tablet and ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.If symptoms recur, you can take a second dose after at least 2 hours, but not more than 300 mg in 24 hours.

Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Patient information

Before you take sumatriptan, a doctor must have determined that your headaches are caused by migraines.Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have risk factors such as heavy smoking, age over 40 or after menopause, as sumatriptan can rarely cause heart problems.Also tell your doctor if you have seizures, liver or kidney disease, are allergic to sulfonamide antibiotics, or are taking medications for depression.Taking it too often can make headaches worse.If you feel chest pain or tightness, seek medical attention immediately.

Pregnancy

Before using this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or planning to have a baby.There is limited information about the safety of sumatriptan in pregnant women.Do not breast-feed your baby for 12 hours after taking it.Some breastfeeding women report breast pain and/or nipple pain after use.

Application

Adults 18 years and older should take 50 mg sumatriptan. If symptoms recur, another dose can be taken within the next 24 hours, but at least two hours apart.Please note the package leaflet.

Notes

The medicine contains lactose and less than 1 mmol (23 mg) sodium per film-coated tablet, making it almost sodium-free.Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the package.
