Epsom salt is a saline laxative in powder form.The active ingredient is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate.It is used for short-term use in cases of constipation and for emptying the intestines before diagnostic and therapeutic measures.No prescription is required for this product.

Epsom salt is used for short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel movements before surgery or examinations.It helps relieve the agonizing feeling of constipation.

Mode of action

Epsom salt acts as a saline laxative.The active ingredient magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is hardly absorbed by the intestinal cells.Instead, it draws water into the intestines, causing the intestinal contents to soften and increase in volume.This triggers the reflex to empty the bowels.

Contraindications

Epsom salt must not be used in cases of hypersensitivity to magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, intestinal obstruction, impaired kidney function, inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases and water and electrolyte balance disorders.Children under 6 years should not use the product.If you suspect an overdose, which may manifest as muscle weakness, fatigue, numbness of the fingers, impaired consciousness or cardiac arrhythmia, you should consult a doctor immediately.

Dosage

The powder should be dissolved in a glass of water (approx. 250 ml).Unless otherwise prescribed, adults should take 2 to 3 teaspoons (approx. 10 - 15 g) of the powder before going to bed.Children over 6 years of age should take half the dose (approx. 5 - 7.5 g).

Notes

Laxatives should only be used for short periods of time without a doctor's recommendation.Long-term use can lead to chronic constipation and other problems.If there is no success after short-term use, contact your doctor or pharmacist.Laxatives are not suitable for weight loss.There may be medicines with which interactions occur.Therefore, tell your doctor or pharmacist about any medicines you are already using.

Storage

The medicine must be stored protected from moisture, for example in a tightly closed container.It must not be used after the expiry date stated on the can and carton.The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
