Instructions for use for Biofanal 100,000 IU ointment, 50 g
Biofanal® ointment
Biofanal® ointment is a specific anti-yeast agent for the treatment of Candida infections of the skin and vaginal mucosa. The ointment contains the active ingredient nystatin. No prescription is required for this product.
Area of application
Biofanal® ointment is used for yeast infections of the skin, in the body folds, on the palms, feet, nails and for vaginal yeast infections in the external genital area. The preparation is an antifungal and is used for skin infections caused by proven nystatin-sensitive yeasts such as Candida albicans and Torulopsis glabrata.
Active ingredients / ingredients / ingredients
The active ingredient in Biofanal® ointment is nystatin with a concentration of 100,000 IU per gram of ointment. The other ingredients include base gel, hydrophobic polyethylene and thick paraffin.
Contraindications
The medicine must not be used if you are hypersensitive to nystatin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Dosage
Always use Biofanal® ointment exactly as described or after consulting your doctor or pharmacist. The recommended dose for adults, newborns, small children and children aged two and over is to apply the ointment to the affected skin areas 2-3 times a day.Use should be continued for approximately 6 days until the disease subsides.Continuing treatment for another 8-10 days is recommended to ensure treatment success. The treating doctor determines the duration of use.
If you have used more than you should, symptoms of poisoning are not expected due to the limited local application. If you forget to use it, do not use twice the amount, but continue using it as described in the dosage instructions.Do not stop using it without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
Intake
Biofanal® ointment is intended for use on the skin. Please wash your hands before use.
Patient information
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using the medicine.Due to the high osmolarity of nystatin, its use in very underweight and immature premature infants is not recommended. No special precautions are required when driving or using machines.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine. In therapeutic doses, nystatin is hardly absorbed by the organism via the intact skin or mucous membranes and does not cross the placental barrier. It is also not expected to pass into breast milk. The medicine can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Notes
In the case of fungal infections, all affected areas must be treated to prevent further illnesses.Treatment must be carried out long enough to prevent relapses (at least a week, on average 2-4 weeks, longer if necessary).Biofanal® ointment can affect the safety of condoms, which is why additional contraception methods should be used during the treatment period. When used against vaginal thrush, it may make sense to treat your partner with the ointment at the same time in order to avoid renewed infections.Any yellow discoloration of laundry caused by the active ingredient nystatin can be easily washed out.
Hygiene
Moisture caused by sweating provides good conditions for the spread of fungi, so make sure your laundry is breathable and washable at 60 °C.In the intimate area, clear water should be used for washing and, if necessary, a cleaning product suitable for the vaginal environment. It is important to always wipe from front to back after using the toilet.
How does nystatin work?
Nystatin binds to ergosterols in the fungal cell membrane. This makes the membrane more permeable, i.e. more permeable to cell components, so that transport processes are disrupted. The growth of the fungus is inhibited (fungistatic effect) and the fungus dies (fungicidal effect).
Fungi as pathogens
The presence of fungi on human skin and mucous membranes is initially normal.Only when there is excessive reproduction does a fungal infection occur.A very common pathogen is the yeast Candida albicans.
The risk factors
Factors that favor fungal infections include a weakened immune system, therapy with antibiotics or corticosteroids, diseases such as diabetes mellitus and stress.Vaginal thrush is often caused by hormonal changes such as during pregnancy, menopause or the pill.
Symptoms of a fungal infection
There is itching in the affected areas, which can be accompanied by pain.Vaginal thrush causes a burning sensation as well as redness, swelling and yellowish-white, crumbly discharge.
Benefits of Biofanal® ointment
Biofanal® ointment contains the biological active ingredient nystatin and has a specific effect against yeast fungi, protects the physiological skin flora and has a fungistatic and fungicidal effect against growing and dormant fungal cells. It has a favorable resistance level, is not absorbed, has a local effect and does not interact with other drugs and is the drug of choice during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
