Arthrex Schmerzgel contains the active ingredient diclofenac sodium, which belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs/analgesics. It is used for the external supportive symptomatic treatment of pain in acute strains, sprains or bruises in the extremities due to blunt trauma. Adolescents over 14 years of age may use it for the short-term treatment of pain in acute bruises, strains or sprains due to blunt trauma. A doctor should be consulted if symptoms persist for more than 3 days. The recommended dose is a thinly applied layer of gel 3 times a day, requiring a gel strand of about 8 cm in length. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 9 g of gel. The gel should only be used externally and should not be applied to open wounds or skin lesions. It contains propylene glycol and must not get on the eyes or mucous membranes. Before applying a dressing, the gel should be allowed to dry on the skin for a few minutes. The duration of application is usually 1-2 weeks. No special dose adjustment is necessary in elderly patients. No dose reduction is necessary in the case of impaired kidney or liver function. The gel must not be used in children under 14 years of age. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use. The gel should be stored at room temperature away from heat. Side effects of the gel may include hypersensitivity reactions of the skin, such as rash, itching or inflammation. It should not be used if there is hypersensitivity to the ingredients or certain conditions, such as asthma or nasal polyps.
