What is Prospan cough syrup?

Prospan cough syrup is a herbal medicine used to treat persistent coughs.Such a cough, which cannot be coughed up, can lead to inflammation of the respiratory tract.Prospan cough syrup helps to liquefy stuck-on mucus and thus support coughing up.The cough syrup is available in two pack sizes: 100 ml and 200 ml.

Mode of action

Prospan cough syrup contains dry extracts from ivy leaves, which are very well tolerated.The saponins contained in ivy leaves work in three ways: they relieve coughs, dilate the bronchi and relax the muscles, thereby reducing the urge to cough.This clears the airways and allows the tough, stuck-on mucus to be removed more easily.

Active ingredients and ingredients

100 ml of Prospan cough syrup contains 0.7 g of dry extract from ivy leaves (5 - 7.5: 1), with ethanol 30% (m/m) serving as the extractant.Other ingredients include potassium sorbate (preservative), anhydrous citric acid, xanthan gum, flavoring, sorbitol solution 70% (crystallizing) and purified water.2.5 ml of the cough syrup contains 0.963 g of sugar substitute sorbitol (Ph.Eur.) = 0.08 BE.

Areas of application

Prospan cough syrup is used to improve the symptoms of chronic inflammatory bronchial diseases and acute inflammation of the respiratory tract with cough.The cough syrup loosens mucus, relieves the urge to cough and has an anti-inflammatory effect.No prescription is required for this product.

Dosage and intake

Prospan cough syrup can be taken by children and adults.The recommended dosage is 2.5 ml twice daily for children aged 0 to 6 years, 5 ml twice daily for children aged 6 to 11 years and 5 ml three times daily for adults and adolescents aged 12 and over. The cough syrup is dosed using a measuring cup and taken morning, afternoon and evening.The bottle should be shaken well before each use.

Contraindications

Prospan cough syrup should not be used if you are known to be hypersensitive to any of the ingredients, during pregnancy or breastfeeding.Children under one year of age should speak to a doctor before use.

Notes

If symptoms persist for a long time, shortness of breath, fever or purulent/bloody sputum, a doctor should be consulted immediately.Prospan cough syrup contains sorbitol, so people with fructose intolerance should discuss this with their doctor.
