Vitamin D is essential for healthy bone growth in children - a deficiency can lead to, among other things, rickets.The body produces vitamin D itself, but only with the help of UV-light, from which children should be better protected.Experts therefore recommend taking vitamin D for all infants - and older children should also ensure an adequate supply of vitamin D.

The small Dekristol tablets can be dissolved particularly quickly in water and can therefore be easily taken every day.

Area of application

Dekristol Fluor 500 IU/0.25 mg tablets are used for the combined, preventive treatment of tooth decay and rickets in infants and children up to 18 months of age.This is particularly true if the fluoride concentration in drinking or mineral water is below 0.3 mg/l and no other fluoride is taken.Examples of additional sources of fluoride include fluoride toothpaste, fluoride salt or fluoride tablets.

The ingredients of Dekristol Fluor 500 IU/0.25 mg tablets include colecalciferol dry concentrate, 500 IE colecalciferol, 12.5 µg colecalciferol, 0.55 mg sodium fluoride, 0.25 mg fluoride ion and various excipients.These include alpha-tocopherol, carboxymethyl starch sodium salt, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, corn starch, sodium ascorbate, poly {O-[hydrogen-(oct-1-en-1-yl) succinyl] starch} sodium salt, povidone K25, sucrose, colloidal silicon dioxide, medium chain triglycerides and a total of 23 mg sodium ion.

Contraindications

If you are known to be hypersensitive to individual ingredients, Dekristol Fluor 500 IU/0.25 mg tablets should not be taken.

Dosage

Infants and young children up to 18 months of age receive 1 tablet daily containing 0.0125 mg or 500 IE vitamin D3 and 0.25 mg fluoride.Dekristol Fluor 500 IU/0.25 mg tablets are not intended for premature or malborn infants with a body weight of less than 3000 g or for children over 18 months of age.

The tablet should be dissolved on a teaspoon or in a small transparent container in about 5-10 ml of water.Disintegration usually takes 1-2 minutes and can be accelerated by gently moving the teaspoon.

Intake

To avoid unwanted complications, the tablet must never be given undissolved to infants and small children.The dissolved tablet should be left to act in the mouth for some time to better utilize the local fluoride effects, if possible.The best time to use it is in the evening after brushing your teeth, as the high fluoride concentrations on the teeth are then retained for longer.

If toothpaste containing fluoride is used, treatment with the medicine must be stopped.If further treatment with vitamin D3 is necessary, the doctor should be consulted.

When adding the disintegrated tablets to a bottled or porridge meal, ensure that the entire portion is consumed.The food should be cooked and cooled before adding the tablet.

Patient information

Particular caution is required if the child is fed balanced diets or if formula is prepared with drinking or mineral water containing more than 0.3 mg of fluoride per liter.In this case, additional fluoride intake is not recommended.Care should also be taken when using milk fortified with vitamin D3, as the addition of vitamin D3 may not be necessary.

The medicine should not be used if the child is prone to calcium-containing kidney stones, suffers from sarcoidosis or has a disturbed parathyroid hormone balance.The doctor must also decide on its use on a case-by-case basis if there is limited kidney or liver function or if there are chronic illnesses that impair growth.

If other medicines containing vitamin D3 are prescribed, the dose of vitamin D3 in this preparation must be taken into account.Additional administration of vitamin D3 or calcium should only be given under medical supervision.

During long-term treatment, blood and urine calcium levels should be monitored regularly and renal function should be checked by measuring serum creatinine.In case of hypercalcemia or hypercalciuria, treatment must be interrupted.

Pregnancy

Dekristol Fluor 500 IU/0.25 mg tablets are not intended to be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Notes

Dekristol Fluor 500 IU/0.25 mg tablets contain sucrose. Please do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.
