Calcivit D is a vitamin-mineral preparation that is used to treat combined vitamin D and calcium deficiency states in older patients.It also serves as an adjunct to specific osteoporosis treatment in patients with established or high risk of such deficiencies.The product is available without a prescription.

Active ingredients and ingredients

The active ingredients in Calcivit D are calcium carbonate and colecalciferol.Each chewable tablet contains 1,500 mg calcium carbonate, equivalent to 600 mg calcium, and 4 mg colecalciferol dry concentrate, equivalent to 400 IU vitamin D3.The other ingredients include aluminum sodium silicate, butylated hydroxytoluene, gelatin, magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch, mannitol, colloidal silicon dioxide, modified starch, sucrose, medium chain triglycerides, xylitol and flavorings.

Contraindications

Calcivit D must not be taken if you are allergic to the active ingredients or other ingredients, if you have elevated calcium levels in the blood or urine, if you have kidney stones, calcium deposits in the kidneys, impaired kidney function, parathyroid disease, vitamin D overdose, myeloma, bone metastases, immobilization osteoporosis and sarcoidosis.The product is not suitable for children and adolescents.

Dosage and application

Adults take 1 chewable tablet 1 to 2 times daily.The chewable tablets should be chewed and swallowed or sucked with a little liquid.The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor.Overdose may cause loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, increased thirst, increased urine output, dehydration, abdominal pain, constipation, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disorders, bone pain, calcium deposits in the kidneys and kidney stones.If an overdose is suspected, a doctor should be contacted immediately.

Side effects

Possible side effects include increased blood calcium levels, increased calcium excretion in urine, hypersensitivity reactions, itching, rash, hives, flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.If kidney function is impaired, the risk of increased amounts of phosphate in the blood, kidney stones and increased amounts of calcium in the kidneys may be increased.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

During pregnancy, daily intake should not exceed 1,500 mg calcium and 600 IU vitamin D.Overdoses of vitamin D must be avoided because persistently elevated calcium levels in the blood can be harmful to the developing fetus.Calcivit D can be taken during breastfeeding, although it should be noted that calcium and vitamin D pass into breast milk.

Special Notes

Calcivit D contains sucrose.Patients with an intolerance to certain sugars should only take the preparation after consulting their doctor.Dairy products have a high calcium content, which should be taken into account when taking Calcivit D.Oxalic acid and phytic acid can inhibit calcium absorption, so calcium-containing medicines should not be taken within 2 hours of consuming such foods.

Storage

Keep Calcivit D out of the reach of children and do not store it above 25 °C.Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the package.Do not dispose of medicines in wastewater.Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicine when you no longer use it.
