Nystatin Holsten Suspension

Nystatin Holsten Suspension is a treatment for yeast infections in the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal area.The active ingredient nystatin has a specific effect against yeast fungi, especially Candida albicans and other Candida species.No prescription is required for this product.

Areas of application

The suspension is used for the topical treatment of infections caused by nystatin-sensitive yeasts.These include:

Fungal infections in the oral cavity (oral thrush), fungal infections of the esophagus and fungal infections of the gastrointestinal tract (intestinal thrush).

Dosage and instructions for use

The suspension should always be taken exactly as directed.The usual dose for infants is 0.5-1 ml 4-6 times a day for oral thrush and 1-2 ml 4 times a day for intestinal thrush. Adults and children take 1 ml 4-6 times a day for oral thrush and 2 ml 4-6 times a day for intestinal thrush.The maximum dose should not be exceeded.

For oral thrush, the suspension is dripped into the mouth after meals and moved for as long as possible before swallowing.In infants, a cotton swab can help to wet the entire oral mucosa.For intestinal thrush, the suspension is taken before meals.The bottle should be shaken vigorously before use.

For oral thrush, treatment should be continued for 2-3 days after the symptoms disappear.For intestinal thrush, the usual treatment period is 2 weeks, although the medication should be taken for at least 2 days after the symptoms have subsided.The drug should not be taken for longer than 28 days without medical advice.

Composition

The active ingredient is nystatin.1 ml suspension contains 100,000 IU nystatin.The other ingredients are methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (E 218), propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (E 216), glycerol 85%, sucrose, highly disperse silicon dioxide, purified water and flavorings.

Mode of action

Nystatin damages the outer covering of fungi, called the cell membrane.As a result, the shell loses some of its functions, cell components escape and the cell can dissolve.Depending on the active ingredient concentration, the growth and reproduction of the fungi is inhibited or killed directly.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken if there is hypersensitivity to nystatin, related active ingredients such as amphotericin B or any of the other ingredients.Premature babies should only use the product after consulting a doctor or under medical supervision.

Side effects

Only side effects that have so far only occurred in exceptional cases are described for the drug.If you notice any discomfort or change during treatment, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Storage

Keep medicines out of the reach of children.The medicine must not be used after the expiry date stated on the container.It should not be stored above 25°C.After opening the suspension, the shelf life is 6 months.

Important notes

Be careful if you are allergic to fungal medications.Parabens can cause hypersensitivity reactions.If you have an intolerance to sucrose, the sugar content should be taken into account.

Patient information

Particular caution is required when using the drug in very underweight and immature premature babies.No special precautions are required regarding the ability to drive and use machines.

Pregnancy

At therapeutic doses, nystatin is barely absorbed and does not cross the placental barrier.It is also not expected to pass into breast milk.The medicine can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
