General information about Nystatin Holsten Suspension
Nystatin Holsten Suspension is a medicine that works specifically against yeast fungi, especially Candida albicans and other Candida species. It is used to treat fungal infections in the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal area.No prescription is required for this product.
Areas of application
The suspension is used for the topical treatment of fungal infections caused by nystatin-sensitive yeasts. These include infections of the oral cavity (oral thrush), the esophagus and the gastrointestinal tract (intestinal thrush).
Mode of action
The active ingredient nystatin damages the outer covering of fungi, known as the cell membrane. This damage causes the cell components to leak out and the cell to dissolve.Depending on the concentration of the active ingredient, the growth of the fungi is inhibited or killed directly.
Composition
The active ingredient in Nystatin Holsten Suspension is nystatin, with a concentration of 100,000 IU per milliliter. The other ingredients include methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (E 218), propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (E 216), glycerol 85%, sucrose, colloidal silicon dioxide, purified water and flavorings.
Dosage and application
The dosage depends on the age group and the type of infection.Infants receive 0.5-1 ml of suspension 4-6 times daily for oral thrush and 1-2 ml 4 times daily for intestinal thrush.Adults and children take 1 ml 4-6 times a day for oral thrush and 2 ml 4-6 times a day for intestinal thrush. The suspension should be shaken well before use.
For oral thrush, the suspension is dripped into the mouth after meals and kept in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing. In infants, a cotton swab can be used to wet the entire oral mucosa. For intestinal thrush, the suspension is taken before meals.
The duration of treatment for oral thrush is 2-3 days after the symptoms disappear and for intestinal thrush it is about 2 weeks, although the intake should be continued for at least 2 days after the symptoms have subsided.
Storage
The medicine should be kept out of the reach of children and not stored above 25°C.After opening the suspension, it should be used within 6 months.
Contraindications
Nystatin Holsten Suspension must not be used if there is hypersensitivity to the active ingredient Nystatin, related active ingredients such as amphotericin B or natamycin, or any of the other ingredients.Premature babies should only use the medicine after consulting a doctor or under medical supervision.
