General information

Capstar 57 mg tablets for large dogs is a veterinary medicinal product containing the active ingredient nitenpyram.This product is intended for the treatment of flea (Ctenocephalides felis) infestations in dogs.No prescription is required for this product.

Contraindications and precautions

There are no known contraindications.The veterinary medicinal product should not be used in animals weighing less than 11 kg.No special precautions for the user are required.

Side effects

In the first hour after administration, the pet may experience increased itching caused by the fleas' reaction to the product.In very rare cases, temporary hyperactivity, panting, vocalizing, and excessive grooming or licking may occur.Transient neurological symptoms such as muscle tremors, ataxia and convulsions have been reported very rarely.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Nitenpyram can be administered during pregnancy and lactation.Studies in laboratory animals showed no teratogenic or foetotoxic effects.Tolerability has been demonstrated in pregnant and lactating cats and dogs.

Interactions

There are no known interactions with other medicines.In clinical studies, no adverse drug reactions were observed when nitenpyram was used concomitantly with other veterinary products.

Dosage and application

The minimum effective dose is 1 mg/kg body weight.Dogs weighing between 11.1 kg and 57.0 kg should receive one tablet.Dogs weighing over 57.0 kg should receive two tablets.The frequency of treatment depends on the degree of infestation.For severe flea infestations, daily or bi-day treatment may be necessary until the flea infestation is under control.The tablets can be administered with or without food.

Overdose

Nitenpyram is well tolerated by the target species.Overdoses of up to 50 mg/kg in cats and up to 70 mg/kg in dogs were asymptomatic.Side effects such as salivation, vomiting, loose stools, cramps or reduced activity only occur at higher doses and disappear quickly.

Shelf life and storage

The veterinary medicinal product has a shelf life of three years if it is stored intact in the container.It should not be stored above 25°C.

Composition

One tablet contains 57 mg of nitenpyram as the active ingredient as well as the other ingredients microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, lactose monohydrate, anhydrous silica and magnesium stearate.
