Thioctic acid, the active ingredient of this medicine, is a substance that the body produces itself and that influences various metabolic processes.Thioctic acid also has antioxidant properties that protect nerve cells from harmful degradation products.The preparation is used for abnormal sensations caused by diabetic nerve damage (polyneuropathy).

Active ingredients and ingredients

This medicine contains 600 mg DL-alpha-lipoic acid as the active ingredient.The excipients include microcrystalline cellulose, quinoline yellow (aluminum salt), low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, lactose 1-water, macrogol 6000, magnesium stearate (vegetable), colloidal silicon dioxide, talc and titanium dioxide.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to thioctic acid or any of the other ingredients.Patients with a certain HLA-genotype (more common in people from Japan and Korea, but also found in Caucasians) have an increased risk of insulin autoimmune syndrome, a disorder of blood sugar regulation in which blood sugar levels can drop sharply.

Dosage

Always take the medicine exactly as described or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.The usual dose for abnormal sensations caused by diabetic polyneuropathy is one film-coated tablet (600 mg thioctic acid) daily, which should be taken about 30 minutes before the first meal.Since diabetic nerve damage is a chronic disease, long-term use may be necessary.Your treating doctor will decide on the duration of use in each individual case.

No prescription is required for this product.

If you take more than you should, you may experience nausea, vomiting and headaches.If more than 10 g of thioctic acid is taken, especially in combination with heavy alcohol consumption, severe symptoms of poisoning can occur.In such cases, immediate hospitalization is required.

If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose.Do not stop treatment without consulting your doctor as your illness could worsen.If you have any further questions about use, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Intake

The film-coated tablets should be swallowed whole and with sufficient liquid on an empty stomach.Concomitant consumption of food may hinder the transfer of thioctic acid into the bloodstream.Therefore, it is particularly important to take the tablet half an hour before a meal, especially in patients with delayed gastric emptying.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medicine.No special precautions are required.After use, a change in the smell of urine may be noticed, but this has no clinical significance.Children and adolescents should not take the preparation as there is no clinical experience for this age group.

The preparation may impair the ability to drive and use machines.If side effects such as dizziness occur, activities that require increased attention should be avoided.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only undergo treatment with this preparation after careful recommendation and monitoring by a doctor, as there is currently no experience with this patient group.Nothing is known about the possible excretion of alpha-lipoic acid into breast milk.
